Morocco Sees Largest Anti-Government Protests in Years

Over the weekend, Morocco witnessed some of its largest anti-government demonstrations in recent years, with protests erupting in at least 11 major cities. The demonstrations, largely youth-led, quickly escalated into clashes with police as anger over economic hardship, unemployment, and political restrictions grew stronger.

Protesters carried banners demanding greater freedom, job opportunities, and government accountability. Many chanted against corruption and rising living costs, issues that have been fueling frustration across the country.

According to local reports, riot police were deployed in large numbers, leading to confrontations with demonstrators in cities such as Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakesh, and Tangier. Several protesters were reportedly injured, and some arrests were made, although exact figures remain unclear.

This wave of protests highlights growing discontent among Morocco’s younger population, who make up a significant portion of the country’s workforce but face limited prospects. Observers warn that unless reforms are implemented, unrest could intensify in the coming months.
