Astronomers Discover Asteroid 2025 SC79 — The Second-Fastest Orbiting Space Rock Around the Sun

Astronomers have identified a remarkable new asteroid named 2025 SC79, which completes its orbit around the Sun in just 128 days, making it the second-fastest known asteroid in our solar system.

According to researchers, the asteroid is roughly the size of a skyscraper, measuring between 120 to 200 meters in diameter. It moves in a highly elliptical orbit that brings it closer to the Sun than Mercury at certain points.

While its speed and orbit are fascinating, scientists confirm that 2025 SC79 poses no threat to Earth. Instead, its discovery provides valuable insights into the evolution of near-Earth objects and the gravitational influence of the Sun on fast-orbiting asteroids

.

The discovery was made using advanced sky-survey telescopes, and further observations are underway to study its composition, trajectory, and rotation pattern.

Experts believe that studying objects like 2025 SC79 can help humanity better understand how solar radiation and gravity affect smaller bodies in the solar system — knowledge that could be crucial for future planetary defense and space exploration missions.
