Augustus “Gus” Lamont, a 4-year-old boy, vanished on 27 September 2025 from his family’s remote homestead in South Australia. 

Last Known Details

He was last seen playing outside around 5:00 p.m., near a mound of dirt or sand at the Oak Park Station property, which lies about 40 km south of Yunta in South Australia. 

At about 5:30 p.m., a family member (his grandmother) went out to call him in, but he was missing. 

The search began after the family realized he was missing, approximately a few hours later. 

Search and Investigation Efforts

In the days that followed, a large-scale search operation was launched, considered one of the most expansive in South Australia’s history. 

Resources included:

  • South Australia Police (SAPOL)

  • Australian Defence Force (ADF)

  • SES (State Emergency Service) volunteers

  • Helicopters, drones, infrared imaging, satellite technology

  • Aboriginal trackers, mounted patrols, ATV & trail bike teams 

A footprint (boot print) was found in the search area near a dam, but after examination, it was ruled out as unconnected to Gus. 

Despite covering over 470 sq km of terrain in initial phases, no conclusive trace of Gus has been found. 

The terrain is extremely harsh and remote — with rough landscape, high temperatures, dust, and limited landmarks — which greatly complicated search efforts. 

Current Status & Outlook

As of 17 October 2025, the renewed search has officially concluded for now, with no new evidence discovered. 

The case has been shifted to SAPOL’s Missing Persons Investigation Section and is being managed under “Taskforce Horizon.” 

Authorities emphasize that there is currently no evidence of foul play, though other possibilities (e.g. wandering, misadventure, third-party involvement) remain under consideration. 

Police strongly caution against spreading false or manipulated images related to Gus’s disappearance, since several hoax images have circulated online. 

Despite the suspension of the ground search, investigators have not ruled out future operations if credible leads emerge.
