Major incident declared as Storm Claudia causes flooding and disruption

Storm Claudia has swept across parts of the UK, Ireland and into Europe, bringing heavy rainfall, flooding, high winds and widespread disruption.

What happened

In South Wales, especially the town of Monmouth, a “major incident” was declared after the River Monnow burst its banks following heavy rainfall overnight.

Up to 119.6 mm of rain was recorded in 12 hours in southeast Wales.

Rescue operations were underway: many homes and businesses flooded, roads submerged, vehicles underwater and tree-falls blocking routes.

In England, nearly 50 flood warnings and 130+ alerts were active.

In Portugal, the storm’s effects included a tornado that killed an 85-year-old British woman and injured others at a campsite in Albufeira.

After the rain, a sharp cold snap is expected: arctic winds will bring snow, frost and daytime highs staying in single digits in the UK.

Impacts & Disruption

Homes and businesses flooded, especially in Monmouthshire.

Transport heavily disrupted: rail services cancelled or delayed, roads blocked by water and debris.

Power outages reported, tree damage from high winds.

Authorities urging caution: avoid affected areas, allow emergency services access, expect further weather hazards.

What to watch for / advice

Stay away from flooded areas and fast-moving water. Roads may look passable but are dangerous.

Follow updates from local authorities (fire brigade, environment agency) for flood warnings.

Be prepared for transport disruption and power cuts — check travel before setting out.

With the cold snap arriving, make sure vulnerable people are warm and safe; beware of icy surfaces and snow.

Outlook

While rainfall may ease, river levels in some places have not yet peaked — meaning additional flooding risk remains.

The weather will remain unstable for the coming days as the aftermath of Storm Claudia moves through the region.
