Trump Urges Israel's President to Grant Full Pardon to Netanyahu | BBC News

Donald Trump has formally asked Isaac Herzog, the President of Israel, to grant a full pardon to Benjamin Netanyahu, the current Prime Minister of Israel, who is on trial for multiple corruption-related charges.

In the letter sent on November 12, 2025, Trump described the charges against Netanyahu as “political” and “unjustified”, and called Netanyahu a “formidable and decisive war-time Prime Minister”.

While the Israeli presidency is largely ceremonial, the Israeli President does hold the power to grant pardons under exceptional circumstances. However, under Israeli law, a formal pardon request must follow established procedures—including a submission by the person seeking the pardon—and pardons are generally only granted after a verdict.

Herzog’s office responded that they hold Trump in high regard for his support of Israel, but reiterated that any pardon request must go through the formal process.
