Trump says Zelensky using war as excuse to avoid election | BBC News
U.S. President Donald Trump recently accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of using the war as an excuse to avoid holding new elections.
Trump argued that continuing without elections pushes Ukraine away from democracy: “They talk about a democracy … but it gets to a point where it’s not a democracy anymore.”
Zelensky, for his part, has said that Ukraine is ready to hold elections — within 60 to 90 days — if security conditions can be guaranteed by allies.
He defended the delay by citing active war conditions, Russian attacks, displaced populations, and other logistical and safety challenges.
Nonetheless, Trump says the Ukrainian people deserve the choice to vote — that they should have the chance to decide their country’s future.
