US Carries Out “Massive” Strike Against Islamic State in Syria

According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation targeted more than 70 IS infrastructure and weapons sites across central Syria, using fighter jets, attack helicopters, rocket artillery systems, and over 100 precision-guided munitions. �

The strikes were carried out late Friday as part of “Operation Hawkeye Strike,” which President Donald Trump and U.S. defense officials described as a strong retaliation — not the start of a new war — against extremist militants who attacked U.S. and allied forces. �

The operation came after a December 13 ambush near Palmyra, where a lone gunman allegedly linked to IS killed two U.S. soldiers and a civilian interpreter. In reaction, Trump vowed very serious retaliation and warned that any future attacks on Americans would be met with greater force. �

In addition to U.S. forces, Jordanian fighter jets joined the operation, helping strike several targets. After the strikes, Syria’s foreign ministry reaffirmed its commitment to fighting ISIS, saying the extremist group must not have any safe haven on its territory and urging cooperation with the international coalition. �
